Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) excelled by winning 9 gold medals at the International Higher Education Institution Invention and Innovation Conference and Expo (PECIPTA) 2022, which took place from November 2 to 3, 2022, at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Bachok Campus, Kelantan.

The Director of Putra Science Park (PSP) UPM, Prof Ir Dr Kamarul Arifin Ahmad, said that UPM has once again demonstrated its excellence with this impressive achievement.

“PSP UPM, as the Technology Transfer Center managing UPM's intellectual property, remains committed to building networks with industry players and the community to ensure that the nation's research outcomes are shared not only nationally but also internationally," he said in a statement today.

UPM showcased 20 entries, with 10 innovations successfully shortlisted for the physical competition. Among the winners awarded gold medals were UPM Faculty of Engineering lecturer Prof Ts Thariq Hameed Sultan Hameed Sultan; UPM Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences lecturer Prof Ts Dr Hidayah Arifin; UPM Biosciences Institute researcher Assoc. Prof Dr Ina Salwany Md Yasin; and Assoc. Prof Dr Nurulfiza Mat Isa.

Other winners included UPM Faculty of Design and Architecture lecturer Assoc. Prof Dr Nazlina Shaari; Faculty of Engineering lecturer Assoc. Prof Dr Norhashila Hashim; Faculty of Agriculture lecturer Ts Dr Norhayu Asib; Faculty of Science lecturer ChM Dr Siti Efliza Ashari; and Faculty of Food Science and Technology lecturer Dr Ahmad Haniff Jaafar.

Additionally, Hidayah's innovation, 'Nanocellulose: A versatile Nanoadditive,' is the first to produce nanoselulosa using palm biomass with effective quality.

It is suitable as an additive in various industries such as plastics, composites, food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals to enhance product characteristics.

Meanwhile, PECIPTA 2022, with the theme 'Innovation, Creativity, Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Society,' is a biennial event organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) in collaboration with Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA), aimed at gathering researchers from various categories of participation.

This event also celebrates the nation's research innovations from various study clusters and brings together industry players and researchers to strengthen industry networks and explore national research outcomes in line with Malaysia's aspiration to produce globally competitive human capital.

PECIPTA 2022 is the 11th edition, and UMK is the host this year. The participation mode was hybrid, including online judging, with shortlisted innovations competing physically at UMK, Bachok Campus.

This year, it received over 433 entries from various sectors including corporate, schools, public universities, and private entities. More than 80% of the innovations contested in PECIPTA 2022 are ready for commercialization to industry players.

Mohamed Thariq’s innovation, 'Blade for Pineapple Leaf Fiber Extractor Machine,' involves a machine innovation that shortens the production period of pineapple fiber and helps improve quality.

Using the technology developed, it can reduce pineapple plant waste into a new innovation based on the concept of 'from waste to wealth.'
