About Us

The Biomass and Biorefinery (B&B) Research Group, previously known as the Environmental Biotechnology Research Group (EB Group), is a dynamic research team under the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (FBSB) at UPM. Founded in 2004 by Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Ali Hassan, the group has grown significantly and now comprises ten full-time lecturers/researchers, along with several associate members. EBGroup was established with the mission of converting sustainable and renewable bioresources into value-added green products, encapsulated by the tagline “Waste to Wealth through Biotechnology.” Between 2008 and 2011, the group developed a Biocompost Pilot Plant at the Biorefinery Complex UPM, supported by the MTDC CRDF grant, and moved the Biomass Technology Laboratory to the same complex. In 2022, leadership passed to Prof. Ts. Dr. Hidayah Ariffin, and in 2024, the group was rebranded as the Biomass & Biorefinery (B&B) Research Group, continuing its legacy of innovative biotechnological advancements in agriculture and sustainable practices.
